A Winning Method for Playing Online BlackjackJerry Patterson's Advantage Player HighlightsReprinted from Advantage Player -- Jerry Patterson's Online Casino Gambling Newsletter at CasinoGamblingEdge Some Ideas for BlackjackIs it possible to get an edge in a blackjack game dealt online? At this point in time, we cannot give you a definitive answer. It all depends on the Random Number Generator the casino uses to determine the cards dealt, the number thrown with a pair of dice, the spin result at roulette or the outcome of a video poker game or a pull on the slot machine. Here is our initial thinking about blackjack:
Play this simple method in the free play games with no money at risk. Get a feel for the patterns in the casino's RNG. Are there patterns? Is the game choppy? How long does the chop last before you lose 7 or 11 units? Is a winning choppy pattern evident over several successive days of play? Depending on what you find, maybe a hit-and-run strategy would work grabbing five units or six units and then moving on to another casino. You could open accounts at several casinos and fool around with several strategies based on these potential choppy patterns. If nothing else, you're having fun in the play free mode with no money at risk, and, who knows, you may find a strategy that would warrant risking real money. Research is needed for the other games. Depending on the type of RNG used to generate spin results, sometimes repeating patterns occur. Tests and charting are required to determine if repeating patterns emerge. As stated above, sometimes RNGs are not random at all. They simply repeat long lines of random numbers over and over again. A sharp college student detected such a bias in a Keno game in Canada several years ago ... and won a couple hundred thou before the casino caught on. With several hundred Internet casinos now online, this sort of an anomaly is certainly possible. We welcome your input on advantage methods for Internet Casinos. These articles produced much reader interest and response. Let's start with a very informative letter from a reader about choosing Web Sites you can trust with solid information and about Web Masters who are affiliates of casinos: "It is obviously true that some webmasters, including myself, participate in affiliate programs as a means of earning income for the work we put into our sites. Some are able to avoid affiliate programs because they have strong secured advertising contracts -- but in actual fact these are more often the sites to beware because in many cases they are actually fronts for a casino, or recommend only their key advertisers. "There are a number of other ways to distinguish fair reviews from 'red herrings' (editor's note: by "red herrings," he means fronts for the casinos):
"There is no distinguishing between the two save for affiliate programs and ads. One has to be careful accepting advice from anyone on any issue -- but they must take the time to read through and judge for themselves. If they cannot do this on their own they should either ask others, perhaps friends, or accept the risks on their own. "One other tip -- very often, good websites will have exchanges or links to each other not free-for-all listings, not directories -- through newsletters, recommendations on their pages, etc. In such cases all the prospective gambler need to do is establish that they are not owned by the same company, and they meet the criteria listed above. Once you find a good website or two, you will usually be able to find more which are linked in some way. "See my article on 'Red Herrings' at: http://www.got2bet.com/articles/redherring.shtml Next, a sample notice from the Internet Gaming Commission received in June 2000: "Lucky's Casino has not paid some of the players for quite a while. We have communicated with them and they assured us that they would pay their customers. Allegedly they were being sold and the new owner would honor all debts. Each time we were given a date and the date passed without payment to their customers we were told the sale was delayed a few weeks. That happened again yesterday and our Board decided enough is enough. We have reclassified Lucky's Casino as Extreme Caution Urged. They have emailed us and said when everyone is paid in about three weeks they hope we would reclassify them back. We said we would. But until that happens please AVOID LUCKY'S CASINO." From a reader: "As far as Online Casino's I'm glad you featured Boss Media in this issue -- as you know they are the only Casino's to use so called "Genuine Random," or as Boss Media calls it, "True Random," numbers. The Sales manager of Boss Media has assured me, as a player, that Boss Media Casino's use only Genuine Random numbers in their games. Also a few of Boss Media's Casino's have audited average payouts in excess of 98%. Genuine Random numbers are generated from Radioactive decay. More can be learned about Genuine Random numbers at: http://www.fourmilab.ch/hotbits." I mentioned Boss Media last month as the biggest of the online casino outfits -- a portal for 16 online casinos. I wrote: "Many Internet Casinos use a gambling ezine and/or a player-oriented Web Site as a key part of their marketing strategy. They recruit noted gambling authors to write articles and answer players' questions about the games. Many of the fanciest and most colorful gambling-oriented sites on the Web are sponsored and paid for by Internet Casinos." Your Starting Point for Play in Online Casinos -- Choosing an Internet Casino Based on its Software Package and Public Acceptance To operate in cyberspace, an Internet Casino must have software -- the computer programs that are displayed on your computer screen, the software they supply for you to play the games when you enter their URL and click the Go Button. The casino can acquire this software in one of two ways: (1) by developing it themselves or (2) by acquiring it from a reputable third party software firm. When you select a casino for play, I recommend choosing one that acquired its software, under license, from a reputable third party software vendor. This gives one more confidence in the honesty and integrity of the casino. An in-house staff, under local management control, might be tempted to jack up their odds just a little bit by grabbing a 10-value card or adding a 5 in their blackjack game. I'm not suggesting that a casino would do this, but why not go with the casino at which this question should never even arise? The next question is the choice of software package. Should you consider this when evaluating an online casino for play? By all means yes. The extremely growth of the online casino industry to the supporting gaming software industry; just as more and more online casinos are being formed, so more and more gaming software firms are getting into this lucrative business. It is beyond the scope of this article to teach you how to evaluate, rate, rank and choose which gaming software package to opt for; this function will become part of your search for reputable Web Sites which rate and rank the casinos. But I will get you started by describing here what I believe is that software outfit which can be your starting point for online casino play - Boss Media. There are other Internet Casino Outfits out there who may be just as good, if not better, than Boss Media. If and when you evaluate them, use the points I make below as the basis for comparison. My purpose in presenting these reasons for choosing Boss Media is to get you off to the right start should you decide to venture into cyberspace to play blackjack. Here are the main features for Boss Media (www.bossmedia.com):
Two other Internet Gaming Software Firms you may wish to check out are Microgaming (www.microgaming.com) and Starnet (www.snmm.com). There are other Internet Casino Outfits out there who may be just as good, if not better, than Boss Media. If and when you evaluate them, use the points above for comparison. And, finally, if you should choose a Boss Media casino for play, use the methods suggested in the June Advantage Player (#5) for evaluating it; i.e., check out the casino at internetcommission.com and on appropriate Web Sites.
