The National Football League comes to Florida's city by the sea for SuperBowl 2005

On February 6, 2005, the National Football League is coming to Jacksonville, Florida's "River City by the Sea," for SuperBowl XXXIX 2005. An ocean city and river town, Jacksonville is welcoming NFL SuperBowl football with an extraordinary fleet of the world's most spectacular cruise ships as well as numerous other venues to celebrate the world's premier sporting event in football.

"When we undertake an initiative here in Jacksonville, we usually take it over the top," said Wayne Weaver, owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The St. Johns River flows through the heart of downtown Jacksonville; hence, river city. It is home to over 35 miles of sandy white beaches, more than 55 world-class golf courses, including the Stadium Course at Sawgrass, home of the legendary 17th hole, beautiful state parks, luxurious spas and resorts, the historical sights of St. Augustine, the posh island community of Amelia Island, and the ecologically beautiful Jekyll Island. Leisures include sampling micro-brewed beer at Ragtime, shooting pool at Pete's Bar, eating seafood at one of the oceanfront restaurants or fabulous food at Ruth's Chris Steak House and Morton's of Chicago, revelling in the ambience of The Ritz-Carlton at Amelia Island, or kicking back at several trendy bistros and sports bars sprinkled throughout the area. Abounding in Southern hospitality and charged with Florida magic, Jacksonville enjoys mild climate all year round.

The SuperBowl 2005 theme and slogan, "Building Bridges," reflects the many bridges that connect both sides of the St. Johns River.

"It reflects the literal Jacksonville landscape, with the many bridges that unite this community," NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said.

Jacksonville, Florida is seen to be the smallest market to host a SuperBowl. But Tagliabue is optimistic that it can only make the 2005 NFL football championship game unique because it will have fans living on cruise ships and others being ferried to the stadium by river taxis. He says, "we have an opportunity to give each game even more of a distinctive feel and a distinctive signature than what's been the case in the past."

SuperBowl 2005 in Jacksonville will be held at the ALLTEL Stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 83,000. It is the home of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Interestingly, no host city team has ever played in the SuperBowl game in their home stadium. The San Francisco 49ers played in SuperBowl XIX but the game was played at Stanford Stadium, and not their home stadium of Candlestick Park.

Perhaps the most significant problem that Jacksonville could face is an airport that does not have the capacity to handle the extremely heavy volume of flights that normally arrive during SuperBowl week. Tagliabue also said organizers must meet the challenge of accommodating key business sponsors attending the game who are staying in hotels located in the outskirts of Jacksonville. He said that issue drew attention before last year's SuperBowl in Houston and earlier SuperBowls in Southern California.

"Any time you have a spread-out area, you get that," Tagliabue said. "About the only SuperBowl city that doesn't present that challenge is New Orleans, where much of it is in walking distance."
