Super Bowl 2004 recap with Tom Brady, Adam Vinatieri, and Janet Jackson

The Super Bowl never ceases to deliver memorable results, not only with the NFL football games but also when it comes to Super Bowl halftime shows and commercials, sports bets, betting propositions, odds, and futures. From the year’s chosen football field to the bustle at NFL Super Bowl football sportsbooks, it is nonstop action for the NFL teams and the fans across America. And Super Bowl 2004? Now there’s one that absolutely did not disappoint, thanks in part to Tom Brady and Adam Vinatieri of the New England Patriots, and not to forget, Janet Jackson and her breast-baring wardrobe malfunction.

Super Bowl XXXVIII took place on February 1, 2004 at Houston, Texas. It ended with the New England Patriots at 32 points and the Carolina Panthers at 29, a perfect ending to what was a surprisingly spectacular event for the competing NLF teams down to Super Bowl football sports betting, odds, futures, proposition bets, commercials, and halftime entertainment.

Super Bowl 2004 First Half

In the beginning, Super Bowl XXXVIII had a bit going against it: relative anticipated dullness. As has been predicted at the NFL Super Bowl football sportsbooks and sports betting, wagering, and handicapping sites, the day would start slow and two defensive teams would make for a dull game. Prior to the game itself, played in the city that is home to America's space program, there was a tribute to NASA and the crew of the shuttle Columbia, which broke up over Texas exactly a year ago. The game began and most of the first half did live up to the predictions. Both NFL teams were scoreless for nearly 27 minutes, the slowest start in NFL Super Bowl football history. New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri missed one field goal and another was blocked.

The game opening’s scoring drought was cut short in the final three minutes of the first half. The teams got going with 24 points in the final 3:05 of the first half. The Patriots dominated with a 7-0 lead on the first of quarterback Tom Brady's two 5-yard TD passes. New England outgained Carolina 125 yards to minus-7, and Panthers QB Jake Delhomme was sacked three times. Although the game turned around with Delhomme leading the Panthers on a 95-yard drive, tied for second longest in NFL Super Bowl football history, capping it with a 39-yard TD pass. The game tied at 7 with 1:14 left in the half. After a timeout, John Kasay kicked a 50-yard field goal to close the half.

Super Bowl 2004 Halftime Show

Before the second half kickoff, Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson came on to perform a Super Bowl halftime song and dance routine to the song Rock Your Body. No NFL football betting propositions outside of the NFL games could have predicted how that Super Bowl halftime performance would turn out. As the number ended with them singing, “Gonna have you naked by the end of this song,” Timberlake would snatch off part of Jackson's bustier on stage, revealing a breast clad only in a sun-shaped “nipple shield,” in front of a record 144.4 million US viewers.

Deliberate or not, what happened with Janet Jackson at the MTV-produced Super Bowl halftime show set off a furor that the world would talk about long after the NFL football championship game had ended. During the halftime show, New England linebacker Matt Chatham also tackled a streaker on the field, and the day would simply never be the same. The New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers gave the NFL Super Bowl football sportsbooks and fans alike a second half show of their own that not even Janet Jackson’s halftime mishap could outshine.

Super Bowl 2004 Second Half

Super Bowl XXXVIII made a total turnaround in the second half of the NFL football championship game, giving fans and followers of NFL Super Bowl football sports betting, odds, futures, and proposition bets just what they came for. The scoring never stopped. The New England Patriots were ahead. The Carolina Panthers were ahead. The Patriots were ahead. Then the Panthers tied it at 29 with its third fourth-quarter TD on a 12-yard pass from Delhomme to Ricky Proehl with 1:08 left. Kasay kicked the ball out of bounds, giving the Patriots field position at its own 40. By the fourth quarter, the teams had combined for 37 points, the most in any quarter in Super Bowl history. And then came the most reliable foot in football.

New England led 14-10 at the half. After a scoreless third quarter, they made it 21-10 on the second play of the fourth on a 2-yard run by Antowain Smith. That capped an eight-play, 71-yard drive featuring a 33-yard pass from Brady to tight end Daniel Graham. Then Carolina scored on DeShaun Foster's 33-yard run on a six-play, 81-yard drive. But the 2-point conversion pass was behind Muhsin Muhammad, and the score remained 21-16. The decision to go for two would come back to haunt coach John Fox. New England seemed ready to put the game away when they got the ball back, but Brady made a rare mistake, throwing an off-balance pass that Reggie Howard intercepted in the end zone.

Two plays later, Delhomme found Muhammad behind the Patriots defense for an 85-yard score, the longest play from scrimmage in Super Bowl history, to give the Panthers a 22-21 lead with 6:53 left. Fox again went for the two-point conversion and failed. It was the first time the Patriots trailed since November 23. The last time was also in Houston, when they rallied from a 20-13 deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Texans 23-20 in overtime on, what else but, a field goal by Vinatieri.

The Panthers' lead did not last as long as they would have wished. Brady came back with a TD pass to linebacker Mike Vrabel with 2:51 remaining, and Kevin Faulk ran in for the two-point conversion to give New England a 29-22 lead. About two minutes later, Delhomme and Proehl hooked up to tie the score, giving Vinatieri another chance to be a hero. Brady moved the Patriots 37 yards in six plays, hitting Deion Branch to set up Vinatieri's winning kick, which prevented the Super Bowl from going into overtime for the first time.

New England Patriots vs Carolina Panthers

Thus ended Super Bowl 2004 – with a thrilling back-and-forth final quarter that Vinatieri finished off with his foot. In fact, this was no isolated victory for Patriots K Adam Vinatieri. The 32 year old who hailed from South Dakota State College did the same thing at the Super Bowl two years ago, beating the St. Louis Rams on the final play of the NFL football championship game.

Although he suffered a second half interception that took New England longer to bag the NFL football championship, Patriots QB Tom Brady was voted the game's MVP for the second time in three seasons. At 26, Brady from Michigan College is now a two-time Super Bowl MVP, and he earned it. The Super Bowl 2004 victory would not have been possible without him, as he completed 32 of 48 passes for 354 yards and three touchdowns. The 32 completions were an NFL Super Bowl football record.

Brady set up Vinatieri's 41-yard field goal with four seconds left to give the New England Patriots their 15th consecutive victory and second NFL championship in three seasons with a 32-29 victory against the Carolina Panthers. The Super Bowl fans roared, the NFL football sportsbooks followers did not blink an eye, NFL Super Bowl sports betting propositions, odds, and futures were either done or undone, and Super Bowl XXXVIII ended with a well-deserved blast.
